Statement of Support for Water Affordability and Household Protections in Michigan

We, at the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA), are in full support of the package of bills introduced by Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang and Rosemary Baye and State Representative Donovan McKinney to establish statewide Water Affordability and Household Protections.

The package of bills we support is not just a legislative endeavor; it is a lifeline for countless Michigan residents. It establishes a comprehensive water affordability program by creating a new affordability fund that will provide relief to those in need.

These bills reaffirm the fundamental principle that access to clean and affordable water is a human right. In a state defined by its abundant natural resources, it is our moral duty to ensure that no one is denied this basic necessity.

In conclusion, we wholeheartedly endorse the introduction of these bills, which mark a historic moment in our ongoing commitment to water affordability, residential customer protections, and sustainable water utility operations. We stand united with grassroot advocates, faith leaders, social justice groups, environmental organizations, along with the People’s Water Board Coalition, in our dedication to fostering a Michigan where every individual can turn on their tap with confidence, knowing that access to clean and affordable water is a promise we intend to uphold for generations to come.

Together, we will champion the cause of water justice and create a brighter, more equitable future for all Michiganders.
