The head of the Islamic Organization of North America is scheduled to meet with local FBI officials this afternoon, two days before the organization opens its mosque in Warren. Imam Steve Elturk, head of the organization, and Dawud Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Michigan, were set to meet with the FBI. Walid said the meeting served as a way for both groups to get to know each other and talk about what the Islamic organization has planned for the mosque.
“We want to have good relationships with law enforcement,” Walid said.
Elturk has spent the past year remodeling a building on Ryan Road, just south of 12 Mile, and plans an open house Friday that will allow residents to learn about Islam and tour the mosque.
The mosque has had to deal with several incidents of vandalism since its plans were announced. Elturk was confronted by a man earlier this year who was shouting ethnic slurs.
