Warren Reaffirms “American Core Values Of Freedom, Equality And Justice”

Imam Mustapha (Steve) Elturk shares news that the Warren city council has passed a resolution “Re-affirming the American Core Values of Freedom, Equality, and Justice.”

Elturk, a member of the board of directors of the Interfaith Leadership Council of Metropolitan Detroit, is president of the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA).

According to a column in the July 4 Macomb Daily, “Warren officials and local religious leaders want the public to feel that the city is a good place to live and work and that everyone is welcome in Macomb County’s most populated community.”

The “living” document was requested in March by Rev. Michail Curro, executive director of the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice, Rev. Gary Schulte of St. Sylvester Church, Pastor Roger Facione of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and Elturk, according to the article.

“Arguably Warren, the third largest city in the state of Michigan, has been the poster child for racial and ethnic segregation that hampers metropolitan Detroit and the division between the city and suburbs,” Curro said. “Passing this resolution, therefore, marks a new day in the city of Warren and for the most segregated region in the United States.”

“All praise be to God,” Elturk said. “I am certain that without His involvement this hitoric piece would not have passed. I am also certain that God supports all groups that come together to uphold justice and help others live in diginity and respect.”
